Despite their petite size, engagement rings are made up of many different components. To simplify the design process, this guide walks you through the parts of a ring so unfamiliar terms feel less confusing.
The Parts of a Ring
- Mount (Setting) - the entire metal portion of the ring, excluding the stone.
- Head - the part of the setting designed to cradle the main diamond or gemstone.
- Prongs (Claws) - individual metal pieces bent over the top of a gemstone to secure it.
- Centre Stone - the primary diamond or gemstone in the central position.
- Side Stones - stones adjacent to the center stone that enhance brilliance.
- Shoulders - the sides of the mount, which support the head.
- Shank (Band) - the part that wraps around the finger and is sized to fit.
- Hallmark / Engraving - usually inside the band, indicating the precious metal used.
